Our sailing catamaran was built in 1995 and has two hulls and an ajoining bridgedeck. There is one stateroom aft in each hull with a queen size bed, a vanity and plenty of storage. Two single staterooms are located forward. Both hulls have bathrooms and separate fresh water shower rooms. The galley is in the port hull. The bridgedeck includes a large dining table for six, a navigation station and computer desk.
Equipment on board includes twin 47hp Yanmar Turbo diesels, 2.4kw genset, 11-foot RIB (dingy) with 15 hp outboard stowed on davits, 3 VHF radios, SSB radio, AM/FM radio, Iridium satellite telephone, weather fax, GPS w/chartplotter, autopilot, 24-mile radar, EPIRB, barograph, recording barometer, 3-burner stove, microwave oven, barbeque grill, freezer, refrigerator, icemaker, watermaker, CD player, DVD player, television, fishing gear, and all required USCG safety gear.
Surprise carries three large sails including a multi-colored spinnaker. At 48 feet, her speed derives from her low 9-ton weight, and her fine, narrow hulls. We have had her sailing at 18.6 knots. She motors comfortably at 8 knots.
Surprise is named after HMS Surprise, a 179-foot fully rigged 18th century 24-gun Royal Navy frigate. A replica of this ship was used in the academy award winning film, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, and the ship now has a permanent home at the Maritime Museum of San Diego.
